The Mental Game in Girls’ Hockey: How Kelowna’s Teams Became Champions
The Mental Game in Girls’ Hockey: How Kelowna’s Teams Became Champions
For the first time in history, all three Kelowna female hockey teams have not only advanced to provincials but also reached the championship finals, with two teams (U18 and U15) bringing home Gold and U13 securing Silver. This incredible achievement highlights the growth of girls’ hockey in British Columbia and the power of a strong mindset in high-pressure moments.
As a former elite-level female athlete, coach, and mental performance expert, I have had the privilege of working with these young athletes on the mental side of the game both individually and as a team.

The ability to perform under pressure, stay confident, and push through adversity is what separates champions from the rest. These Kelowna teams didn’t just rely on skill and strategy—they demonstrated the mental toughness required to win at the highest level.
The Championship Mindset: What It Takes to Win
Success in hockey—or any sport—isn’t just about physical ability. Mental performance plays a crucial role in an athlete’s ability to stay composed, make quick decisions, and bounce back from setbacks. Here are some key mental performance strategies that helped these teams excel:
1. Post-Game Reflection & Growth Mindset
After every game, we emphasized reflection: What went well? What can we improve? Developing a growth mindset helps athletes view challenges as opportunities rather than obstacles. Win or lose, these teams embraced continuous learning, which fueled their championship runs.
2. Confidence Building & Self-Talk
Confidence isn’t just about talent—it’s built through preparation and mental training. Positive self-talk, visualization, and pre-game routines helped these players step onto the ice with belief in themselves. Whether it was a key penalty kill or a must-score moment, their self-confidence gave them the edge.
3. Visualization & Mental Rehearsal
Champions visualize success before they achieve it. These players practiced seeing themselves making key plays, scoring goals, and celebrating victories long before they happened. Mental rehearsal helps athletes feel prepared and ready for game-time situations.
4. Team Unity & Mental Toughness
Championship teams have something special: an unbreakable bond. These Kelowna squads built trust, held each other accountable, and lifted one another up. When adversity hit—whether it was a tough game or a bad period—they leaned on each other, stayed composed, and battled through.
Breaking Barriers & Paving the Way for Future Champions
These historic achievements in girls’ hockey are about more than just medals—they’re about inspiring the next generation of female athletes. Hockey Canada and organizations across British Columbia continue to grow the women’s game, but the biggest difference-makers are the players and coaches who prove what’s possible.
As a coach and mental performance expert, I couldn’t be prouder of these athletes. Their success is a testament to their hard work, dedication, and championship mindset. Congratulations to Kelowna’s U18, U15, and U13 teams for making history—you’ve set the bar high for future generations!
Let’s keep growing the game and building champions on and off the ice.
