The Science Behind Self-Talk: How to Speak Life Into Your Mental Health

An encouraging word, at a strategic time, spoken by a trusted person, can change a life. I know that is true for me, and how I became a counsellor. A trusted person, a mentor, pastor, counsellor spoke an encouraging word to me at a painful and pivotal part of my life. And it changed the trajectory of my life.

As a therapist, I know the weight of the words I hear from clients and the weight of the words I speak.

As a wife, I have the unique opportunity and closest proximity to speak life into my husband. There is no one else on the planet that will have that type of influence and access to him when he is feeling down, or to lift him up. And the same is true for him to me.

As a mom of four, I know the importance of speaking life into my children to speak into who I see them becoming.

What an honour! And importance to be aware of our own internal self-talk as it flows out to those around us. Speaking something outloud can shift environments.

Words have the power to speak life–or death– over someone, including yourself.

Have you ever caught yourself talking to yourselfโ€”out loud? Maybe before a big meeting, during a stressful parenting moment, or standing in front of the mirror before a competition? Youโ€™re not aloneโ€”and youโ€™re not crazy. In fact, science is confirming what many of us have long felt intuitively:ย the way we talk to ourselves shapes how we think, feel, and show up in life.

At Alive Counselling, we believe in equipping individuals and families with practical, evidence-based toolsโ€”and self-talk is one of the most powerful tools available.

Self-Talk: More Than Just Inner Monologue

Self-talk is how we speak to ourselvesโ€”internally or out loudโ€”and it has a profound influence on our mental health, physical health, performance, and relationships. According to research, positive self-talk can increase vitality, improve immune function, reduce stress, enhance cardiovascular health, and even lower the risk of disease. It builds confidence, strengthens resilience, and sustains long-term success.

On the flip side, negative or critical self-talk can increase anxiety, shame, fear, and even contribute to depression or burnout. If youโ€™ve ever said something to yourself that you wouldnโ€™t dare say to a friend, youโ€™ve felt the sting of harmful internal dialogue.

What the Research Says (And Why It Matters in Counselling)

As noted by Dr. Caroline Leaf, cognitive neuroscientist and bestselling author of Switch On Your Brain, what you think every moment literally becomes a physical reality in your brain. She writes:

โ€œWhat you are thinking every moment of every day becomes a physical reality in your brain and body, which affects your optimal mental and physical health.โ€

Thoughts are not just fleeting. They change the structure of your brain. This truth is both challenging and empoweringโ€”it means we can rewire our thoughts toward hope, healing, and confidence. Thatโ€™s why in therapy at Alive Counselling, we often help clients become aware of their thought patterns and teach them how to practice intentional self-talk.

Self-Talk in Practice: From the Couch to the Community

In counselling, self-talk shows up in various ways:

  • In anxious teensย who tell themselves, โ€œIโ€™ll mess this up,โ€ before exams or games. Together, we reframe that into: โ€œIโ€™ve prepared, I can do hard things.โ€
  • In burned-out momsย who repeat, โ€œIโ€™m not enough.โ€ We gently explore the origins of that belief and shift toward, โ€œI am doing my best, and that is enough.โ€
  • In high-performance athletesย who want to thrive under pressure. We use self-talk strategies to build confidence and bounce back from mistakes.
