Polyvagal Theory in Counselling | Alive Counselling
At Alive Counselling in Kelowna and online, we draw upon Polyvagal Theory to help you understand and work with your body’s natural response to stress, trauma, and connection.
Rooted in neuroscience, Polyvagal Theory explores how our autonomic nervous system impacts our emotions, behaviours, and relationships. By recognizing and regulating these responses, we can create a stronger sense of safety and resilience.
What is Polyvagal Theory?
Developed by Dr. Stephen Porges, Polyvagal Theory explains how our nervous system responds to and processes both internal and external experiences. According to this theory, our nervous system has three primary states that affect how we feel and react:
- Ventral Vagal (Safety and Connection) – The state in which we feel safe, calm, and connected to ourselves and others.
- Sympathetic (Fight or Flight) – The state of heightened alertness, preparing the body to either confront or flee from perceived threats.
- Dorsal Vagal (Shutdown or Freeze) – The state of disconnection, where we might feel immobilized or numb, often as a response to overwhelming stress.
Understanding these states and how they impact our thoughts, feelings, and behaviours allows us to work with our body’s natural responses rather than feeling stuck or out of control.
Why Polyvagal Theory is Useful in Counselling
Polyvagal Theory provides a framework for understanding and regulating our reactions, especially when they stem from past traumas or stressors. In a therapeutic setting, it allows us to:
- Recognize and interpret bodily responses to stress
- Develop skills for self-regulation, helping you shift from survival responses (fight, flight, freeze) to states of safety and connection
- Build resilience by learning how to manage and cope with stress more effectively
- Enhance relationships by promoting feelings of safety and openness in social interactions
This theory can be particularly beneficial for those dealing with trauma, anxiety, PTSD, and relationship challenges, as well as anyone interested in understanding their body’s responses to life’s ups and downs.
What to Expect in a Polyvagal-Informed Therapy Session
During a Polyvagal-informed counselling session at Alive Counselling, our counsellors integrate body-awareness techniques, mindfulness, and gentle self-regulation practices. We’ll work with you to:
- Identify your nervous system state in various situations, bringing awareness to how you feel in your body
- Practice grounding techniques to create a sense of calm and safety in the body
- Learn breathing exercises that can shift your body from states of stress or shutdown into safety and connection
- Use visualization and body-based practices to gently explore and process difficult emotions
Through these practices, you can begin to feel more attuned to your body, experience a greater sense of control over your reactions, and feel more grounded in your daily life.
