Somatic Therapy in Kelowna and Online | Alive Counselling

At Alive Counselling in Kelowna, we understand that the mind and body are deeply interconnected.

Many of our emotions, stressors, and traumas are stored not just in our thoughts but also in our bodies.

Somatic Therapy offers a way to tap into these physical responses to support healing and create balance in your mental, emotional, and physical well-being. Our Kelowna and online Somatic Therapy sessions can help you reconnect with your body to support healing and growth.

What is Somatic Therapy?

Somatic therapy is a body-centered approach to healing that integrates both physical and psychological processes to address trauma, stress, and emotional well-being. Unlike traditional talk therapy, which primarily focuses on thoughts and emotions, somatic therapy recognizes the body’s role in storing and processing experiences. By working with the body’s sensations, movements, and breath, somatic therapy helps individuals release stored trauma and regulate their nervous system.

For example, a person who has experienced a car accident may find themselves feeling tense or reactive even after the event is over. Somatic therapy can help them process their lingering stress responses through body awareness and movement, rather than just verbal processing.

Who is Somatic Therapy For?

Somatic therapy is beneficial for individuals experiencing:

  • Parents, Perinatal, Postpartum, Moms
  • Kids
  • Athletes
  • Anxiety and stress
  • PTSD and trauma recovery
  • Depression
  • Chronic pain
  • Emotional dysregulation
  • Dissociation or feeling disconnected from one’s body
  • Relationship challenges
  • Burnout and overwhelm

It is particularly effective for those who feel stuck in traditional therapy or those who have difficulty accessing emotions verbally. For example, someone struggling with chronic anxiety may find it difficult to articulate their emotions but might notice a persistent tightness in their chest. Somatic therapy can guide them through body-based exercises to release that physical tension, helping them feel more at ease.

Why is Somatic Therapy Important?

The mind and body are deeply connected. Trauma, stress, and negative emotions are not only stored in our thoughts but also in our nervous system and physical body. When left unprocessed, these stored experiences can manifest as tension, chronic pain, emotional distress, and even illness. Somatic therapy works by helping individuals become more aware of bodily sensations and use movement, breath, and mindfulness to release tension, regulate emotions, and restore balance.

For instance, if someone frequently experiences digestive issues due to chronic stress, somatic therapy can help by guiding them through relaxation techniques and breathwork to soothe their nervous system, improving both mental and physical health.

How to Practice Somatic Therapy
Somatic therapy can be practiced with a trained therapist or independently through self-regulation techniques. The key principles include:

  • Mindful Awareness: Noticing physical sensations, tension, or discomfort in the body without judgment.
  • Breathwork: Using intentional breathing techniques to calm the nervous system.
  • Grounding Techniques: Connecting with the present moment through sensory experiences.
  • Movement and Release: Engaging in gentle physical movements to release tension.
  • Self-Compassion: Practicing kindness and patience with oneself throughout the healing process.

For example, someone struggling with panic attacks may learn to recognize the early signs of anxiety in their body and use deep belly breathing to prevent a full-blown panic episode.

10 Somatic Exercises for Healing
Here are 10 simple yet effective somatic exercises that can help regulate emotions and promote well-being:

  1. Grounding with the 5-4-3-2-1 Method: Engage your senses by naming five things you see, four things you feel, three things you hear, two things you smell, and one thing you taste. Example: If you feel overwhelmed at work, take a moment to ground yourself by noticing the texture of your desk, the hum of background noise, and the feeling of your feet on the ground.
  2. Body Scanning: Close your eyes and slowly scan your body from head to toe, noticing any areas of tension or discomfort. Example: Before bed, scan your body to identify areas of stress and consciously release tension, improving sleep quality.
  3. Progressive Muscle Relaxation: Tense and then relax different muscle groups, starting from your toes and moving upward. Example: If you experience jaw tension from stress, clench your jaw for a few seconds and then release, noticing the difference.
  4. Deep Belly Breathing: Place a hand on your abdomen and take slow, deep breaths, feeling your belly expand and contract. Example: If you feel anxious before a social event, practice deep belly breathing to calm your nervous system.
  5. Shaking It Out: Stand up and gently shake your arms, legs, and body to release built-up tension. Example: After a stressful meeting, step into a private space and shake out tension to reset your nervous system.
  6. Humming or Vagal Toning: Humming, chanting, or deep exhalations with a sigh can activate the vagus nerve and promote relaxation. Example: Humming your favorite song while commuting can help lower stress levels.
  7. Butterfly Hug: Cross your arms over your chest and tap alternately on each shoulder to create a sense of safety and comfort. Example: If you’re feeling overwhelmed, practice the butterfly hug to ground yourself and find calm.
  8. Self-Holding: Gently place your hands on your heart and stomach, providing a sense of warmth and grounding. Example: Before an important presentation, place your hands on your chest and stomach to calm pre-speech jitters.
  9. Walking Barefoot on Natural Surfaces: Connect with nature by walking on grass, sand, or dirt to feel more grounded. Example: If you’ve had a tough day, taking a barefoot walk in the park can help you reset emotionally.
  10. Freeform Movement or Dance: Allow your body to move intuitively to music or in silence, helping release pent-up emotions. Example: Playing your favorite song and letting your body move freely can be a great way to shake off stress.
