3 Steps to Manage Stress and Build Resilience

3 Steps to Manage Stress and Build Resilience

April is Stress Awareness Month!Taking time to understand our stressors and the impact of stress can make a big difference in our overall physical and mental health.

Knowing how your body communicates can help you deal with stressful moments. Learn to not only recognize but also to name these feelings.

Here are some ways your body sends signals to tell you that it’s stressed:
👉 Difficulty concentrating
👉 Headaches
👉 Cold hands
👉 Feeling fidgety
👉 A nervous stomach
👉 Feeling on edge
👉 Irritable or withdrawn

Now that we know how the body tells us when it’s stressed, let’s find out how we can take action to counter the effects!
1. Try new routines
From scheduling bath and bedtimes to blocking off time to plan and prioritize tasks, additional structure can provide a daily framework that allows you to attune to your body’s signals. You can then proactively take measures to manage stress before it becomes overwhelming!
2. Stay connected and make new friends
Whether it’s in person, texting, phone calls or video chats, it’s easier than ever to stay in touch with family and friends. It’s important to have a support system, and having someone to talk to can help provide comfort and reassurance during difficult times. Connecting with loved ones can also help foster a sense of belonging and connection, which can help to lift your spirits.
3. Take time for yourself
Make taking care of yourself a daily routine. Prioritizing yourself and setting boundaries may require declining requests, but it’s not self-indulgent or selfish. Start with small changes in your routine to help build resilience to stressful circumstances. Work in time to exercise, eat healthy foods, participate in relaxing activities and sleep.
