Best of Kelowna 2025, 2 Silvers
Meet the team, Sadie!
1) What is your name, credentials, and where are you from? Sadie Mitchell, Master of Counselling in progress, Kelowna BC
2) What drew you into counselling? It’s something I have been interested in since childhood but the timing was never right until recently. Both of my parents had careers in mental health and my observing them create healing and grace filled spaces for clients is ultimately what created a longing in me to do the same.
3) What are some of your favourite things to work in, and types of people to work with? I love working with children and youth as well as adults struggling with anxiety, relational stresses, and grief.
4) What is it like to work with you? What do you believe about therapy (ie your emphasis on connection), what kind of approaches/modalities or strategies do you like to use ( bonus if you can add why): I am client centred, collaborative, systemic and trauma informed. I believe that the therapeutic alliance is important and therefore the right fit is essential. I love narrative therapy, and motivational interviewing.
5) What do you love about counselling? I love that counselling involves establishing both a genuine connection and applying appropriate skills and interventions.
6) How does someone know if therapy is “working”? If the relationship with your therapist feels supportive, safe and genuine and you are making progress toward the goals established collaboratively.
7) What do you like to do for fun? In the summer I love hiking, traveling and swimming. In the winter I enjoy hibernating in a cozy chair with coffee, and a good book or movie.
8) What are three mental health tips/resources you would like the world to know? (i.e. box breathing, journaling, hiking, calm app, etc): Study after study shows that moving your body, outdoors, for at least 30 minutes has an immediate effect on brain chemistry, increasing the feel-good chemicals and decreasing depressive symptoms.
Practicing grounding techniques during times of low stress and when you don’t need them helps integrate them so you are ready and able when you do actually need them.
9) If someone is curious about counselling, what would you encourage them to start with?
I would encourage you to reach out to people in your life that have been to counselling before and ask what worked, and what was challenging. Then take advantage of free consultations. This is a great way to feel out whether it will be a good fit or not.
Looking for, finding, and connecting with a counsellor can seem overwhelming. We appreciate where you are, we know what that is like, and want to encourage you that you are brave. In our experience, it is so worth it; you are so worth it! You will never regret investing in yourself. Thank you for your time and courage.
